Radiographs and their importance
Radiographs are necessary during your dental visits to diagnose tooth damage and disease that is not visible to the naked eye. X-ray frequency depends on your current oral health, age, disease risk, and signs or symptoms of oral disease. For example, children may require x-rays more often than adults because their teeth are still developing and are more likely to be affected by decay.
For new patients, the dentist may need current images to determine the present status of their oral health to identify changes that may occur later. X-rays will assist your dentist in detecting new cavities, monitoring gum health, and evaluating the development of your teeth.
Studies show that dental radiographs are safe and emit the lowest radiation. Every precaution, such as proper shielding, is taken to ensure radiation exposure is as low as reasonably achievable. Exposure during a routine exam is comparable to a short flight (1-2 hrs).
Digital technology further reduces radiation exposure as compared to traditional film x-rays. Digital images use up to 90 percent less radiation than film x-rays.
